… I live with my grandmother in a village because I don’t know my father and my mother has to work far away.

I have been deaf since I was born and my grandmother could not afford the school fees and the compulsory uniform to go to school. I had to go to a special school because a regular school would not have suited me. So I never went to school: I couldn’t have friends or learn to read and write, which saddened my grandmother and me, but we thought that was the way it should be.

Then we met the BKF team who arranged and managed to enrol me in a special boarding school for hearing impaired children.

BKF paid the school fees and my uniform. I remember my grandmother’s tears of emotion when she saw me leaving with my school clothes and my little school bag on my back !

Now I’m starting to express myself a bit but I’m not talking yet but I’m making progress! The BKF teachers meet my grandmother and sometimes come to visit me at school. This is a great opportunity for me and I have friends, my life has changed. During the school holidays I go back to my grandmother’s house because I miss her sometimes.”
